Subtitle playback with minimal codec install

#1

Post by Muppetman » Wed Feb 01, 2012 10:44 am

Right, long time lurker on the old Green Button forum and just realised this board existed after messing around on the WE forum....

After many years of messing, tinkering and spending far too much money have finally reached the nirvana of WAF (and Kids AF!) and have been running our media centre as our main TV / Video / Audio source.

I've been around the houses over the last few years as far as codecs have been concerned and have tried out all of the main packs, individual installs etc. but for the last year have been running a completely minimal installation - as far as codecs, I've only installed Haali splitter and AC3 filter - nothing else needed and no video playback issues at all! Only other notable installations are Media Browser and Media Center Master.

However, now I want to add subtitle support (i.e. play .srt or .idx subtitle files) - what is the *simplest* way of doing this with my current no-frills installation? I know I can do this easily by simply installing Sharky007's pack, but I don't want the headaches that come with a code pack (no matter how good they are). Also, I want to be able to keep DXVA, as my mini-ITX build (click system link on right) sits under the TV at the moment and runs extremely quietly - however, pushing the processor up 20% requires the CPU fan to spin up to an annoying level (even using SpeedFan).

Thanks in advance!

you'll need vobsub or ffdshow to display subs. i also use Media Control which has an MC add-in which allows you to set subs and audio track for all compatible recordings.

I actually installed Shark007's to get this and it does work perfectly. now i know i just need vobsub or ffdshow i would probably just install these (in addition to haali and ac3filter) but I have never (and i mean never) had an issue with the Sharks pack

Thanks - I will take a look at those tonight when I get home....

I know lots of folks use a Codec pack without issue, I just want to keep things as simple as possible!

All I have loaded is Halli Splitter and VOBsub and it works great. Ther is also a remote control program for VOBsub (MCE remote Plus) that allows you to program a button on your MCE remote to swith subs on and off and cycle through them. It works great.

bobbob and waldoverkill, I've been looking for this info for a long time. I guess I never phrased my question quite right.

So, with this setup, are you saying that the subtitles can be chosen from an MKV file, or does the .srt file need to exist in the same directory, with the same filename as the video file?

Please elaborate!

either. using media control and ffdshow you can select embedded subtitles from mkv's or from an srt file in the same directory as i do for some of my mp4's

from what i can work out codecs don't work on extenders as they use their own internal codecs. i guess they'd have to be burnt in

This is hopefully where the Ceton Q and Echo come into their own.

I use fairly "minimal" codecs. I'm using CoreAVC, Haali, and DirectVobSub for subtitles. Works perfectly.

I don't have an extender to try it on. Just PS3, no xbox yet... :-(

Wow, so with the splitter and AC3 Filter you can play all formats and decode all audio sources properly?? I think your post might just have solved my own problem :D

This topic is a little old, but I am very happy to have found it. I also have just the MKV splitter and didn't want to install any Codec packs for subtitles. I installed VOBSUB and it works perfectly.

One question is how can I manually turn them off for a movie without installing an add-in? I suppose renaming/moving the .SRT file would work, but was hoping for something easier (I don't have any extra keys on my remote to use with an add-in).

Also, do the .SRT files need to be the same name as the video file or will it use anything with a subtitle extension in the directory?
