Windows 7 Reinstall - Codec Q's

#1

Post by PeteT » Wed Dec 14, 2011 3:02 pm

Hi all

I will be reinstalling windows 7 in the next few days. i am currently using ffdshow to decode my video and audio.

My system have been stable since i installed windows 7 when it came out. I am tempted to save all my ffdshow settings and restore them after the reinstall.

However, Is there a new prefered codec(s) to use?
I have never really been a fan of codec packs.
I have my audio upscaled for live to to 5.1.

I need to view mkvs with h264 and x264
I also need to view freesat (DVB-S2)

Any thoughts before i jump in

Pete

All you need is Haali splitter to handle the mkv container. Everything else Win7 will handle natively.

Only install 3rd party codecs if you have files that don't play using the MS codecs.

Having said that, I do install ac3filter as I like to tweak audio settings a bit and I have a few files that won't play without it.

Freesat doesn't need anything other than the built in codecs - in fact you can't use 3rd party video codecs for TV if you need MPEG2 and h.264 suppport like you do with Freesat HD (and Freeview HD now).

Thank you
I like to keep it simple :)

I saw something about using media player classic codecs? No use?

I'll end up using ac3filter or ffdshow because I have a pet hate with audio lip sync, lol

I want as little down time as possible so don't really want to be messing to much.

So the standard w7 codecs will play x.264? Is this something new?

That, and reliabilty, is why I suggest just using the built in codecs.

Lip sync issues annoy the hell out of me as well, but I don't see any issue using the built in codecs. It is certainly worth having a go before installing something else.

Nope, Win7 has supported this since at least the beta version, three years ago. It was one of the big draws that got me to put the 7MC beta into regular use at home.

Hmmm, I wonder what my reasoning was to use ffdshow then, maybe it was habit? I can't remember now

Thank you Mark.

Thank you Mark.
Well the reason I used ffdshow is that my surrounded sound speakers don't support dts. The audio needs converting to dd.
I have currently have ac3filter installed and all is good ;)

directvobsub auto loading version is essential if you have mkv with subtitles and don't fancy reaching for the mouse to select different audio tracks when watching films etc.
