H.264 from WMC can not be converted to DVRMS

I just found out that H264 recordings from WMC can not be converted to DVRMS. I do this when I want to play the files on other devices and when I use Roxio Video Wave 2011 edition to edit files.

Any suggestions on software upgrades to solve this problem?

VideoRedo can convert H.264/MP4 to DVR-MS.

thanks, looks interesting.

$96 price tag is a little on the high side for me.

I don't necessarily need DVR-MS, that was just what was available in Windows 7. my first choice would be to use something else that was more universally used.

Edit: I just looked at the current version of Roxio and it is $99, so I guess that is in the same range. the 2011 version I got from Costco and I think it was probably half that with the usb capture hardware.

VideoRedo is extremely versatile and can save files to many different formats. Ya, $96 is a bit pricey, but if you do a lot of video editing, its worth it. There is a 15-day trial mode.

Another +1 for VideoRedo. I use it a ton for format conversion and commercial cutting (ad scan mode)

I asked on the VideoReDo site but have not gotten a response (not a good sign).

just wanted to verify that TVSuite Version 5 can import WMC 7 files directly without an intermediate conversion. I think that is what is referred to as WTV file in their product comparison.

in a side question, anyone know if Windows 10 can convert a WMC 7 file to DVR-MS? I don't have easy access to a Windows 10 computer to try that out.

VideoRedo can directly open recorded TV files from WMC (wtv files). I very often open recorded TV files from WMC win7 to cut commercials and edit for my TV/Movie library. It can save video in original format, translate to another container type (like MKV, DVRMS, etc), and can recode video as well (like MPEG2 to MPEG4, etc).

Can't answer the question about Win10, don't use it, so don't know if it has any built-in video converters (if that's what you're asking).

I believe VRD has a free trial mode, I'd suggest you try it and see if it does what you want. I think it'll do what you're looking for and more.

I had access to a Windows 10 computer and found that the convert to DVR-MS feature does not come up on the menu list when you right-click a file. I didn't have time to look at other places to see if it was still available somewhere else in the system.

The reason h264 does not convert to DVR-MS is that DVR-MS is mpeg2. Converting SD wtv to dvr-ms on Windows 7 was very fast because they were both basically the same file. h264 to dvr-ms is a recode.

re converting to dvr-ms on Windows 10 - the conversion uses wtvconverter.exe in C:\Windows\ehome, and this folder is not present unless you have installed the WMC for Win10 hack. I have WMC on my Windows 10 boxes and although R-click convert to dvr-ms is available it's a bit flaky. VideoReDo is the way to go IMHO.

looks like something has happened to mpeg2 recordings as well. I just tried to convert an mpeg2 and get the same error. I'm assuming it is something that Comcast has done, but it could also be something MS has done.

Have you had a chance to look at VideoRedo? I've been using the program for a few years now & tried editing some of the New H.264 formats which it handles with no issues.

thanks for the information.

not yet, I'm still deciding if I really need it. since the conversion I have noticed WMC locking up more often so if I switch to something like Xfinity DVR I won't need to worry about it anymore.

I was really surprised to see the conversion effect mpeg2 recordings
