I would like to know what h264 settings would be best to spit out "same as recorded" quality from 720 and 1080 wtc broadcast WTV files. Need to retain quality, and have the ability to put them into FCPX in order to cut out the small segments I wish to actually save. FCPX spits out 12Mbps when exporting h264 720p60 files. WTV 720p60 (ABC/FOX) files are roughly the same bitrate, around 5GB per hour. I have been using h264 profile high 4.1, with medium speed and constant fps and 12000 bitrate. Would these be about what I am looking for, or are there other optimizations I should consider?

this is an old question but .....
I have moved to h.265 compression and
I record in HD 1080p then use MCEBuddy to save as 720p h.264
an average 40min tv show with its commercials stripped in h.264 in 720p is about 550mb
and compressed in h.265 with 21.25RF quality in handbrake it will be on average 40% smaller
its better on space .. better on your wifi if you use wifi i use wired..
my primary reason is no appreciable loss of quality and smaller file sizes
