Funny. It looks like it's going to follow the trend of good/bad/good/bad versions of Windows.

MS really loves those damn tiles don't they?
I'm not leaving W7 until I absolutely have to. I figure I have 5 more years easy.

To be fair, the tiles are great on WP8 phones and Win8 tablets. But they do suck big time on a traditional laptop/desktop.
I'm open minded at the moment on the new style start menu. I need to try it before forming an opinion.

In theory, the tiles could actually work great on a HTPC too, but they won't work with a remote, so that's a non-starter.
Glad to see the start menu back and metro apps running on the desktop. At least it's a move in the right direction, finally.

I get why MS went with the tiles. What I absolutely don't get is why they went with tiles and touchscreen on desktop computers. That was insane.
I like the tile interface on my phone. I'm glad I bought a Windows phone to play with and to try out. The very simple idea of putting notifications on the tiles themselves is brilliant. I don't need no stinkin' notification center.
But desktop computers aren't handheld devices, and the paradigm is way, way different. That being said, what I saw of the Start menu--with both traditional and tiled apps side by side popping up--makes sense.
But what do I know. Of the 13 computers/tablets/phones in my personal life, only my WMC computer and my personal phone are Windows. Otherwise, I'm a Mac guy from way, way back. There are a couple Android phones and tablets in there, but otherwise it's all Macs.
And if I could have done cableCARD/Playready/DRM stuff on a Macintosh, I would have. That I had to go with Windows, though, didn't throw me at all. It was the only tool for the job, so I use it.

Absolutely agree. I dislike, and have disabled as much as possible, the notification centre in WP8.1. Shame I can't disable it completely, otherwise I would. Live tile updates more than do the job for me.adam1991 wrote:The very simple idea of putting notifications on the tiles themselves is brilliant. I don't need no stinkin' notification center.

I've managed simply to ignore the notification center. It's easy to do, because once you hit a tile its entry in the notification center simply goes away. In fact, sometimes I find myself surprised to see that little notification center icon at the top of the phone.
Compare that to Android (which I used for 18 months prior), where no matter what you do those notifications in the center stay until you take action to dismiss them. Crazy.
