Tivo not activating older units

Not everyone buys a newer one. Some people find an older unit to dip their toes into the water with.

So, I declare this situation to show WMC having the advantage.

Can't think of any practical reason to buy an older unit just to try. You'll either buy an older model with lifetime already because it's cheaper than new (which you can still do), or you'll buy a new unit (which is cheaper than old units anyway) and activate it.

WMC's advantage is only temporary since it will eventually cease to function as well.

BTW, the S3 you can no longer activate as new was released nearly 10 years ago, pre-dating even Vista.

I think Tivo's move is reasonable.

Are they also referring to ownership changes perhaps? That would be a problem for lifetime units that obviously still have some value.

You can leave a TiVo setup on an old account and just change zip on a re-init. It will work. Whether one would stay active on the old account is another matter.

I have two old S3 HD units just sitting in the closet waiting to give to anyone who wants them. I guess I'll just recycle them?
