New computer. Thoughts on build?

#1

Post by wayloncovil » Thu Oct 01, 2015 11:27 pm

Hi, everybody.

I'm going to build a new PC and would like any thoughts about the following.

I looked at whether to get the 6th gen or stay with the 4th gen and it looks like from a cost perspective, the 4th gen components are a better value at the moment.

Thoughts?

Thanks!

Hopefully you are aware that win 10 no longer comes with or officially supports MediaCenter if you are building an htpc
.
Win 7 & win 8 were the last with MediaCenter for now ( win 8 requires Pro + separate fee for MediaCenter if that is still available?).

Mpgrimm2,
Yeah. :(
I'm sad about it.
I've tried most of the stuff listed on the Wikipedia page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compariso ... e_packages
I think NextPVR and MediaPortal seem to suit my needs. I'll look at SageTV as well once they get the Windows build done.
I've really come to appreciate how good Windows Media Center is.
I wish someone would just buy it from Microsoft and support it.

Honestly I would just go with win 7 home premium and call it a day. Get a Ceton ETH6 or HD Homerun Prime if using cable TV with xbox360's as extenders.

I just recently got a 360 for free that I had to fix (Red Ring o death) and I can't believe all the features it has when connected to the media center.
