I'll pledge $5. I was looking at the new Sony 4K TVs with built in android tv and made me wish that it had DVR capability. I only hope they can reach their goal. I only wish Ceton would have tried a kickstarter with the Q but considering how the echo turned out maybe it's good that they didn't.

Interesting.

But their progress seems to indicate they have not gotten far on recording and playing back protected content.

The HDHomerun View apps already support live viewing of protected content, and this says it will record and playback protected content. I'm not sure what else you're looking for.

So they want $100k to fund this, they have about 10% so far. A long way to go. What happens if they don't get close to what they want?

You don't get charged, they don't develop it.

It says under the risks that they are still working on getting protected content on all platforms, and that it may not happen. But this could be a true WMC replacement if they sort it out!

Sounds interesting.

It also sounds like they may charge a monthly fee if it goes forward.

$30 a month it seems. Still cheaper than a lot of other options.

I'm in. I suspect they probably already have most of the coding done and the bulk of this cost will go to the cablelabs certification for protected content playback. Regardless, if they can get a true cablecard dvr system that can playback protected content in external device that are not an Xbox or windows pc, that just might be the final push ms needs to further develop wmc tech for their own future.
Matt O. ...tivo what? ...dish dvr--uh... huh? ...cable dvr fees--you're kidding, right?

it better be 2x better than TiVo because that is what it amounts to. I wonder if they will offer limetime support.

$30 a year is reasonable and if there support of the app is anything like their support on their tuners this should be a great product.

Probably to offset the cost of providing guide services - which would also solve the long-running issues with MS and their guide.

you mean, in a few hours they ALREADY got $10K.

In the ten or so minutes that I explored things, they went from $10K to $11K.

Hmmmmmm. Fascinating.

I have three of the HDHR ATSC tuner boxes. 6 streams. Works great with WMC.

So this would allow me to have the app in a NAS....hmmmmmmm.

OK, two things come to mind for me:

1) must work on Roku. Period. And I know that's easy to make happen; shoot, with Roku's instructions, *I* could make it happen. At least, the unprotected ATSC stuff.

2) Sorry, guys, I must have commercial skip. Hello, WMC again.

"For back-to-back recordings on the same channel the recording engine shares the same tuner for both recordings."

Possible recapitulation of a very bad feature of WMC. Not if done right, but if done similar to WMC, a big mistake.

I think their point is that it isn't done similar to WMC. As in, you will get the correct amount of buffer time on back to back recordings, but it won't tie up an additional tuner.
