Interesting combination? Looks like it's only live tv right now, but compatable with cable. http://www.zatznotfunny.com/2014-06/sil ... ndroid-tv/

Looks interesting... would be nice to have a competing ecosystem that can do encrypted channels as it seems this one can... wait and see!

For OTA, the Tablo DVR looks very interesting.

They give a demo of the interface and live TV functionality.

I saw that video. Starting at about the 28 minute mark it gets real interesting (for me anyways).Ed wrote:y3dCUPeyhag

Exciting stuff, great to see someone doing something with live tv still. My only concern is not one time did I hear DVR, this seems to be live tv only. Of course it's early but still it seems like a replacement for Media Center is a ways off.

Even if it is only live TV at first, nothings stopping Google from adding DVR support after initial release (and you know there will be a feedback site/forum/form where people can request this stuff). Or, nothing would stop SiliconDust/another developer from coming out with and Android TV app that lets you set up/manage recordings. They could even be planning/working on it for all we know ATM. Just gotta wait and see; though it seems more plausible than not they already thought of DVR and have an answer/solution planned/being worked on (or admittedly, the plan could be 'no').

Well the recording part is the issue that PlayReady will supposedly help fix. We can already stream protected TV to Android/TVs over DTCP-IP

I have questions about SD tuners, recording, streaming, DLNA, DTCP-IP. When I was first trying to decide between Ceton and SD, one reason I chose Ceton was because it clearly recorded and streamed full quality of the Tuner. Whereas SD seems to involve re-encoding the stream to send it to devices.
Is my assumption correct about that?
Are recordings from SD tuners to WMC done in full quality?
Is live Tv from SD tuners to DLNA/DTCP-IP devices full quality?
What determines how much quality is retained/lost?
Is there any user control over how much quality is retained/lost?
Does it depend on the device or bandwidth or? extender, android, ethernet, wifi, DLNA vs DTCP-IP
Does it loose resolution or bitrate or both?
Is the stream mpeg2 or something else?
If you have a full quality recording on your WMC machine and want to play it back on a DLNA/DTCP-IP device, is the full quality retained?

No, we all want it to do what you are saying. In fact we are chomping at the bit to get that version to market already. Where is this new version? MPEG-2 is what they both send currently.tzr916 wrote:Is my assumption correct about that?
My guess is we do not see the newer SD device until the unveiling of the Android TV; they probably play well together.

I don't understand your post. It seems like you are saying it's mpeg2, but then you say we are waiting for something new to come out? Is there any re-encoding going on when using SD tuners, recording, streaming, DLNA/DTCP-IP?IownFIVEechos wrote:No, we all want it to do what you are saying. If your talking about the prime it does not re-encode. A new model for cable cards will do just that to give smaller files (an OTA version is already out). A lot of people want that for streaming to devices etc. Hope that helps. Sorry if I was unclear.

If the underlying architecture is there for playready drm with android tV, wouldn't we be able to use say xmbc or another android based application for live tv and dvr capabilities or am I dead wrong with my assumption here?3rob3 wrote:Exciting stuff, great to see someone doing something with live tv still. Anything would probably still need CableLABS approval of some sort, among other approvals. There was one member somewhere on some forum (I don't remember) who was trying to get a license to build a WMC alternative, and CableLABS shot him down

Google announced the first 'official' Android TV unit today; the Nexus Player:

$100 for the unit w/remote - game pad will cost $40 extra
WiFi only it appears. Other brands' Android TVs can incorporate ethernet if they so desire w/ whatever else. I'm hoping they update my ADT-1 to the release build

Do you think they abandoned the LIVE TV part of this? No mention of it, no icons for it. And now only wireless. Unless the video is transcoded it will be too choppy on a wireless even at ac levels one would have to think (especially if I want to run five of these at the same time)? This may be bad news. Not sure.

You can probably load the SD streaming app in the Play Store directly for live TV for now. I don't think the Fire TV (or generally any ARM device) supports all of the HD audio bit streaming formats, but the Nexus Player is Atom based. We'll see...
