Spent some time today getting new Bolt+ wired in. Haven't transferred a CableCard to it yet, just got it online and updated/activated so I could see a few of the features. So far I'm feeling dissatisfied...

I knew HBO-GO wouldn't work, since I've read that Comcast is shunning it and won't provide activation for it. Supposing I can get mostly same content off of XOD...

The Plex client is horrid. It doesn't work unless the local bitrate is set no higher than 12 mb/s, can't seem to get HD audio to pass through, and no chapter support. My roku3 devices are much better.

I may go through the hassle to get a CC into it to see whether I like TV support, but just not feeling impressed for the money.

Tivo is a good DVR, terrible streamer. Best to stick with some other device for that. Commercial skip, multiple live buffers and streaming recordings from (not to) Tivo are worth the price of admission.

Today only, 6 cable TV tuner Tivo Roamio Pro with lifetime included is $500. Best deal we've seen on the Pro in a very long time. 4 OTA tuner model with lifetime is only $200. It can be modified to work with cable card if you can get your hands on a donor Roamio Basic for parts.

thanks. I have not use for one right now, but the old ReplayTV user in me couldn't help but pull the trigger on that OTA unit. Toss a real hard drive in it, and it's a great spare for just in case, or to resell on Craigslist.

Not Tivo related, but WMC replacement related: Today AT&T unveiled their new streaming cable TV service with on-demand, similar to PS Vue. Sling TV also added cloud DVR to their service (in beta for now). So now we have at least 3 cheaper options to get copy protected cable TV channels and limited DVR capability at a much lower price than traditional cable TV with DVR service. I'll definitely be switching to one of the above in the near future.

FYI, I have been using a Tivo Roamio 4 Tuner for DVRing. Haven't really had huge problems with the guide data, although I don't really watch the more obscure channels. For all my other streaming, I pretty much only use a Roku Stick. It works great. Plus it lets me access HBO Go even though I'm on comcast. Plex works well on the roku stick too.

These services sound great, and I wish I could try them, but for me it is a non starter because of bandwidth caps. As these services gain popularity expect to see tighter and tighter caps implemented as well.
