It's wireless AC, may be fine without ethernet if you have an AC router. Have to see.

There will be other boxes from other developers. The android 5.0 sdk isn't released until tomorrow so they can't start yet. I think the initial box from Google is just going for a basic release for a cheap price to get it out there and for devs to play with. Will be interesting to see how it develops.IownFIVEechos wrote:Do you think they abandoned the LIVE TV part of this? No mention of it, no icons for it. And now only wireless. Unless the video is transcoded it will be too choppy on a wireless even at ac levels one would have to think (especially if I want to run five of these at the same time)? This may be bad news. Not sure.

Nexus Player reviews are out and it looks like it's half baked and nothing on the cablecard front yet. http://feeds.gawker.com/~r/lifehacker/v ... tsongordon

I still haven't seen a single mention of the live tv integration they demoed either. What a letdown.

Doesn't SD already have a Google app to play TV from their tuners? Does this replace that?

It seems like it's specifically for Android TV, and the description is "Live Channels app is for watching Live TV. Watch your favorite news, sports, movies and TV shows from various channel sources such as built-in tuner, IP-based tuners, and more and show them instantly on your Android TV."

I don't know much about Android TV, I just assumed it worked with the regular Google play store.

Android TV has "access" to the Google Play store in that apps specifically marked as compatible with Android TV will show up and can be downloaded. Vice-versa you can't install Android TV apps on an android phone. I'm sure you could sideload the SD app on Android TV though

Gotcha. Wonder how easy it is to root the Android TV. If it is, might be worth looking into as a STB along with the SD app and MB3.

Why would you need to root it?

I'm just assuming there are apps in the play store that don't work because they're not compatible with the device. Rooting would allow you to install those apps regardless of whether the store sees those apps as compatible with Android TV.

I see. I'm pretty sure sideloading will work for those apps, root not required (assuming you can find the apk file elsewhere). The Play Store is what limits what you can install.

Exactly, for example, I side loaded XBMC onto the Fire TV and it works nearly as well as on a desktop surprisingly. One problem with side loaded apps on TV boxes is that the interface may not work or be ideal for navigating with a remote
