Comcast MPEG4 Change and Intel HD Graphics

#1

Post by joeer77 » Mon Oct 12, 2015 3:13 pm

Hi all. Just received a letter from Comcast stating they are switching cable TV format to mpeg4 Oct 26th for Portland OR metro area. I've read on other forums that my Ceton PCIe4 Infinitv tuners will work fine after the change, but my integrated graphics on my intel Core i3 530 will not be able to handle mpeg4 decoding. Can anyone on the TGB confirm on these older gen i3/i5 chips that it won't work? I run two Ceton cards so I'm out of PCI-e slots on my MOBO so it's either buy a older PCI HDMI video card or buy another Xbox 360 for the living room (or upgrade HTPC). Any inputs or ideas?

Really? That doesn't seem like that would be that hard of a task? I thought MPEG 2 required more resources than H.264?

From what I have read, intel never created a driver for gen 1 or 2 i3/i5 CPUs to support MPEG4. Just looking for someone on here who has experience with cable MPEG4.

According to this Intel developer document the 2nd generation chips have hardware H.264 encoding capabilities. So if it can encode I'm sure it can decode.

Even my 6 year old 32bit Intel Atom processor with Intel HD graphics decodes Blu-Ray. I would like to read where you saw folks having issues with this.
