TWC -> Buy your own Modem by Nov1st or pay $3.95/month

Received a card in mail from TWC telling me I have a week to change out or pay.
Has link to 'approved' modems you can use on their system.
Thinking I will pay $100.00+ for my own modem for two reasons.
#1 Seems they are not going to replace the crappy thing that is in the cupboard when they start charging me $4.00 a month. They have been out at least 4 times in the last few years and even though we have had current modem for about 5 years they say 'it looks fine'. On phone the tech does tests and says modem seems to be giving problems. The guy who comes out doesn't see it, and leaves saying call us if you keep having trouble. Do these guys get a bonus if they don't replace gear?
#2 I don't want to give them my $4.00

Can anyone see advantage/disadvantage of owning your own modem?

The advantage to owning your own modem is obvious. It's yours and you don't have to pay $47.40 per year to rent it. The only disadvantage to owning your own modem is you have to buy another one when that one craps out.

On a side note, check this out: http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/10/0 ... modem-fee/

This is better than Charter because they require that you use their modem for all new service. I'm grandfathered in with my SB 6120 DOCSIS 3.0 though.

In order to re-up my new customer rates for another year, Charter required me to drop my modem and start paying a fixed $49.99 for Internet Plus and their modem. However, that's everything (taxes, modem rental, fees, everything) for a fixed price. No "junk fees." Maybe a TWC guys wants my Motorola Surfboard SB6120 DOCSIS 3.0 modem?

I changed TV packages last Fall when the promo I got in May 2012 when I switched from uverse to charter to use my HDHR Prime expired and they did not require me to change internet service but it was never bundled with TV service because I had internet from Charter and TV from Uverse since early 2011 when I dropped Uverse internet. I have "lite" internet which at one time was $19.99/mo, then $24.99/mo and now it is $29.99/mo but I'm getting 30/5 now instead of the 3/1 it was supposed to be before. My SB6120 has been flashed by Charter and not much to my liking but I won't complain.
