DNS Configuration Questions
I have a DNS question. Is it incorrect of me to point my HTPC's NIC at my router's IP, then point my router to the DNS server's IP?

Nope that's fine. The lag introduced by a query from your router and back is negligible and can actually be faster.Crash2009 wrote:I have a DNS question. Is it incorrect of me to point my HTPC's NIC at my router's IP, then point my router to the DNS server's IP?

Sounds like your advice would be different if one was using Static rather than DHCP Routes?STC wrote:^ and before I get burned down in flames I'm talking cached routes for your LAN

We're getting off topic.- I'll move these posts in a bit-
I'm referring to a basic routing If you have one central 'hub' for all queries to get answers and it's inside your LAN. An example would be shall we say a query for facebook.com. Once one LAN member has asked for the address, it will be cached for a certain period on the router so that any other member of your LAN asking where facebook.com is will get the cached address speeding up their query.
Horses for courses though really.

Are you talking about ipconfig /displaydns the resolver cache? I agree, It would be nice if that was on the router. Maybe that's what these 2 files on the router are for:STC wrote:We're getting off topic.- I'll move these posts in a bit-
Custom configuration file "dnsmasq.conf"
Custom configuration file "hosts"
They are located on the same page as where I enter the DNS Server info.
