Stopping Network Issues by using a switch?
Hello,
I am experiencing issues with choppy video on recorded tv and with stuttering video on live tv on my televisions using 2 XBox 360s as extenders.
My setup is an a HP Ivy Bridge with 8 GB RAM, Ceton Quad Core, and Verizon FIOS as my cable/internet provider. I have done quite a bit of things to try to and remedy this issue after doing some research including disabling network throttling, changing the link speed to 100MBPS full duplex. What i have done for recorded tv is turned off Show Analyzer for commercial skip which helps with the recorded shows but ultimately would like to have a solution where I can turn that back on.
My question is should I try to add a switch to the setup in order to increase the efficiency of the data transfer between the Media Center PC and the Extender playing live tv or a recorded show?
Any help would be appreciated, just out of ideas at this point.

What does the network look like now? Can you give us a simple drawing? Are you relying solely on the FIOS box as the interconnect point for the HTPC and extenders?

Venom, thanks for the reply. Yes I'm currently just using the FIOS gateway as the go between my extenders and my HTPC.

I had the same issues. I tried a few cheap switches before finally getting an HP Procurve 1410. I very rarely have network issues now.

Since it is likely that the PC supports Gigabit on its Ethernet port, I recommend upgrading to a gigabit switch at the same time. I just bought and am quite happy with a D-Link GO-SW-8GE switch. It is supporting up to 3 streams from an HD Homerun Prime (cablecard tuners) and 2 extenders. I have had no problems with this configuration.
You will connect all of your devices to the new switch and then add 1 additional cable connecting the new switch to the Verizon box for internet access.

A good switch with some descent sized buffers could indeed improve the situation. Sometimes finding the per port buffer specs is difficult.kuruption213 wrote:Venom, thanks for the reply. Yes I'm currently just using the FIOS gateway as the go between my extenders and my HTPC.
The HP Procurves are good.
I had good luck with the Dell Powerconnect switches.
Go gigabit..

Thank you all for the reply. I will research all of the switches mentioned in this thread and add this to my setup in order to resolve my network issues.

Just curious, when you do the network test on the 360 what kind of results are you getting? Does it say the network is performing fine?
