Use nbstat -a to find the MasterBrowser

https://www.speedguide.net/faq/cant-acc ... roblem-289

Master runs the SMB Server

All the rest are Clients

The technet link from post 14 shows how to set the master. My goal is to eliminate smb v1 all together without effecting network sharing but I'll stay here and help you out too.

Use Windows Programs and Features to enable the Win10 Laptop to be an SMBv1.0/CIFS Client

Wait a month or two until someone "Cracks the Problem". Or, start bugging M$ Barb

Maybe someone else might be interested in that. From the looks of things Win7 needs an upgrade or Win1709 needs a downgrade.

Because I dont use my win10 laptop as a media player I can just setup filezilla and accomplish most of what I want. I'm willing to bet emby, Kodi, wmc etc on Win10 and those programs will see my shared media on my win 7 server. I'm not worried about getting rid of smb v1 because I still have all the other versions to work with and MS probably kept it around out of either laziness or for compatibility sake

I've disabled smb v1 on all of my machines, and given network, and network service permissions to read/modify my shared folders as appropriate. My windows 7 shares can all see each other, and my WIn 10 machine has no problem seeing my Win 7 shared folders. I also set the Win 7 server to master browser as described in one of these links. I haven't finished confirming SMB is completely disabled on every machine (Confirmed as in checked for it again through the CLI on each machine) but most of my problems look to be solved. I can also add all of my shared media in Win 10 WMC.

About the network service account: https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/librar ... s.85).aspx Bascially a network service invocation allows a network resource to act as if it were a resource on the local computer if that makes sense. Programs and files that are granted network service permissions will not be prompted for a password so if there is a machine you don't trust on your network, then granting network service permissions to a folder that machine can access might introduce some risk into your network.

I'm not through testing yet but it appears as though Emby also works with SMB V1 disabled. If I don't have any problems from Emby then the last plugin on my fix it list will be Recorded TV HD.

About password protected sharing from: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/win ... 725?auth=1

1- With Microsoft and many other OS's and NOS's inherited rights are always assumed.
For example - If I share the root of the C: drive - everything on the c: whether they are marked as shared or not is in fact shared.
At the root of the issue is that when you enabled Pubic Folder sharing Windows 7 do not enabled the public folder but \users folder.
The Public Folders are stored in a folder called "public" in the \Users directory. The net effect is that EVERY - USERS folder is Shared
when you "enable" sharing public through the network and sharing center.

2- There was comment made about not wanting your personal files and folders shared even if you share the public folder and given your user ID and password. Frankly, EVEN if this worked correctly and it does NOT, if you have a concern about this, you should never share your user id and Password EVER - all someone needs is a few second directly in front of your computer with the password and ID you have given them to get to those files. It does not take much, they already have to be close for you to share the files, one visit to the john and files are quickly copied to a flash drive! - Solution create a different ID or an id for each person who you need to share with this should be a non-admin user. There is a little more that you need to truly make sure your file are truly protected but that’s for another day.

Since, I brought up the adding of users ids and password - I want to comment on JayTF's reply it does not matter if the users is an admin user or not. The sharing permissions granted through the Networking and Sharing center when "Turn on Public Folder Sharing" is enabled grants "everyone" full access to the \users directory. SO every user has full access to the every folder under the \users directory - including the public folder as well as folders and files for any other user that has been added to that computer or domain.

My findings do not support Jimmyleo either - The parent inherent from the child - Only the parent (c:\users) has been shared maybe that has been fixed with a patch and I do not see it today.

So the sum this up..
If through the networking and sharing center, Change Advanced sharing setting, for Public Folder share you enable “turn on so anyone with network access can read and read in the public folders” is Shares the %root%\users folder and grant share permission to Everyone with full access.
This not only grants access to the public folders but all the folders for all the users on that computer. It is not just administrative users the have this access, it truly sets everyone with full access.
To make the issue worse, if you turn off public folder sharing through the network and sharing center it does nothing. The share of the %root%\users and the permissions all remain..
Surly this is not the intended or proper functions.

The work around for this simply do not use, ever, the network and sharing to enable public folder share.. do it either through fsmgmt.msc.
or go old school drill down through the drive to the specific folder you wish to share - right click go to properties --> sharing tab --> Advanced sharing button --> Click share this folder --> add the permissions for the appropriate users and apply.

IF you have already enable public folder sharing through the network and sharing center - you will need to follow that old school method to un-share the user directory.

Home group is being removed from future builds. See here https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.window ... elog%3famp
I'm not sure if it can be re-enabled or not but at this point I might just switch from whs 2011to was 2016 and setup smb V2 and dlna shares. You can do this through the libraries feature as well I think using the method crash suggested earlier.

I don't know if this is relevant to your situation but I'll add this here in hopes it may help you or others.
I recently reinstalled WHS 2011 on my server... (yes it's old outdated software.. I'm aware.. But It still works for me.)

I had the original installation of WHS 2011 since I built my server years ago. I had a few issues with it so I decided to wipe it and start fresh.

After the reinstallation I had REALLY slow file transfers from my PC (Windows 10) to the server.. It was driving me crazy.
After a lot of google searching and trying a few things I finally found this.. http://www.howtosolutions.net/2013/06/f ... g-windows/

I did only the last section Disabling "Large Send Offload (LSO)".. and Bingo.. transfers were back at 90-100 Mbps vs. the 15-30 kbps transfers I was getting. I did reboot after disabling both for IPV4 and IPV6. Holy hell what a difference. I only had to disable this on the Server.
HTH,

I also run WHS 2011 and it also does exactly what I need it to. I'll look into that because I'm looking for ways to reduce network traffic and disable services on my machines. So far, I've disabled homegroup, I'm in the process of disabling IPV6, and I'm looking at ways to disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP but I think that is going to require me to setup WHS 2011 and my DHCP. I'm not sure how to do that just yet.

I am still using Homegroup (yup noob lol). I can access all I need through that on my HTPC and Server without issue. The only problem I was having was slow network traffic when Writing to the server only. I also use Stablebit Drive Pool and even tried adjusting settings in that in case it was an issue with the software.. didn't help. Disabling LSO was the magic ticket for my setup.

Streaming from the server to HTPC of movies etc. was flawless.. But trying to transfer anything to the Server was SOOO Painfully slow. Before disabling LSO for IPV4 and IPV6 it took almost 30 min to transfer a file that was approx. 4GB in size. After disabling it I was able to transfer a 8GB file in @2 to 3 min. Huge difference.

Let me know how you get on if you disable this and it works for you as well.

Hope LSO works for ya.

Does your WHS have a Task Manager?

What is getting overloaded? Disk, network, or cableing

To test cabling try pathtest

I finally ran an Ethernet cable to my TV room. Throughput seemed to improve compared to the poweline adapters but I was still having all kinds of wierd problems. I have disabled smbv1 on all of my machines but I never restored network browsing. Once I restored that all of my problems went away and everything works really good as long as it's not on wifi.

I have a machine that doesn't always wake when it is supposed to. I'll try this soon, and report back. https://superuser.com/questions/49130/w ... from-sleep. Particularly I want to attempt disabling hybrid sleep.

I don't know how well it work but because I removed SMB v1 capabilities from all of my machines, I'll try removing SMB v1 dependency from the LanManService reg key as well. Hopefully this will fix a potential issue I'm having with the computer browser service backup browser. For details, see here: https://community.spiceworks.com/topic/ ... entication
