One worked immediately after upgrading (a Hauppauge 1196 WinTV-HVR-1250)
The other one require me to reinstall the drivers that came with it (can't remember the name of it but it said it was Windows 7 compatible and it uses the Conexant chip)

I think you'll find the lifespan of a USB drive to be rather short if it's being used as the live tv buffer. Reading from a flash drive is basically free as far as wear and tear, but the memory chips have a finite lifespan when writing.

You don't need to log in for Extenders to work. Technically, Extenders actually log in remotely to the serving PC, and the Extender session is actually a remote desktop (it's a bit more complicated than that, but the Extender isn't relying on anything running in the foreground on the PC).

My W7HP x64 (SP1) installation is less than 15 GB. Of course, by the time you add in the page file (if you have one), the hibernation file (if you have one), and whatever space is required for whatever extra programs you have installed, the space requirement will climb well over 15 GB.

I think WMC has a good chance of living on for a long time in its embedded form. I could see MS keeping that end alive for companies like Ceton that leverage it for dvrs and extenders.

installing windows 8 on the same machine with a new hd broke my playready and all copy protected recordings became unviewable.

i got a 360 working yesterday, but a weird issue came up where it said all tuners were in use. it was like every time i changed the channel, it used a new tuner and acted like it was recording or something on the previous channels. i restarted my PC and will try again today.

I wonder if this is simply a SKU for the stand alone WMC product. Similar to the product that companies are using in their set top boxes (aka, Ceton).

It wouldn't surprise me if this will be the only way to obtain WMC in the near future.

These reasons along with a few others (CGMS-A flag preventing recording, overly restrictive DRM, no support for the HD-PVR) are why I shifted from MCE to SageTV about 4 years ago. But now SageTV was bought by Google and is unavailable, at least for now.

That assumes that one can run Media Center on a tablet and that you are on your LAN. This should also work for a HDHR for OTA broadcasts. The problem is that you have to sustain a 19Mbps network connection to your tablet. Given that tables are so mobile it doesn't really make sense to connect them...

I believe the Niveus product is just a front-end for MCE. Not that that's a bad thing, but it still fully uses MCE on the backend

Surely microsoft get OS monies in for extender PC's ? Weren't there loads of rumours about Xboxes being sold at a loss to get u into Xbox live?? The OS can't be a loss maker surely and if you're linked in to XBox live i'm sure it'll be harder to circumvent the OS registration security.....
