Hi all,
Just a quick post to see if any of our members are willing / able to make a small donation to help cover our running costs?
I completely understand that times are hard for a lot of folks and many people are unable to offer any financial support.
Please don't feel pressured into donating...

Hi, there is no suggested donation amount - any amount is much appreciated

HomeGroup- Multiple users show up
by

On my HTPC, I have two users. When I browse the homegroup from a laptop, I see both users. I'd prefer to only see 1, for simplicity sake. Even when I've removed all the shares for the user I am trying to remove, I still see that user listed in the homegroup. Is there any way to accomplish this?

If 95 percent of my recordings are on one low-def channel and you're mainly using Live TV, then I'm not sure why WMC is even relevant for your needs. it sounds like it'd be cheaper to just get basic STBs from your cable company, and maybe Roku's or WDTVs for any stored media.

Well im not sure if the actiontec supports dhcp for multiple vlans or not, will need to research.
I was under the impression that a port based vlan could be set up at the switch to segment traffic without direct involvment from the router. If I was setting up a sub net type vlan then I would see...

It looks like, in the end, it was a problem with my router, which did not allow it to save ip lists. This seems to be a common problem with basically all mainstream routers nowadays. You need to either forward RDP, port 3389, to the machine you want to connect to (not suggested!!) or setup a VPN. Your 3G connection is an external address that belongs to the cellular provider. Jumbo frames have to be supported end to end. Otherwise all you end up doing in fragmenting more packets. It's also not much use on a 100 meg network. Don't bother with it.

Hi,
just curious to see if anyone has any ideas on how to speed up the allocation of ip addresses.
On my setup, the router is the dhcp provider, this is connected by 100 mbit connection to a gigabit switch, which is then connected to our main house gigabit switch, and most of the pcs etc connect...

Thanks guys,
once we get our bb connection sorted, I'll go back to manually assigned ip addresses, and see if that helps, if not, I'll go for the network analysis to see if any bottlenecks are on my network.
Thanks
Tony

My eyes go cross eyed trying to do windows stuff on my HTPC with a wired keyboard 5 feet in front of the big screen. So I think doing a remote desktop from my den would make more sense. However I have never done remote desktop.
I am trying to connect to the PC in the next room, which is already...

Windows Live Mesh works well with Windows 7 Home Premium (free download from MS) with one caveat. You can't operate a remote PC that's in Media Center full screen. As far as I know, you need to take the remote PC out of full screen (or close MC with a remote control first) then connect.
Other than...

I have an H55 intel motherboard with onboard gigabit nic on my HTPC. I just bought a HP Procurve 1410 switch. I have another computer with an onboard nic. All the wire and female adapters are cat6. File transfers between the two are stuck at about 10 MB/s. Way too slow for moving movies around. I...

Start with the basics. Make sure you have current drivers on both the machines for thier respective NIC cards. Connect the 2 machines via a crossover cable. Check the transfer speeds. If all checks out ok add the switch into the picture. If speeds are still slow start looking at flow control or...

Hey all--
Question-- how are people getting around setting up WHS2011 Remote Access when ISPs blocking port 80?
I'm considering getting a DynDNS Account with CustomDNS to use their WebHop feature to hop (a DynDNS domain name I will have) during the WHS2011 Remote Setup (where it's asking for my...

Maybe the wizard is actually trying to contact the domain on 80 when verifying and since it can not it sends you to Go Daddy assuming that domain is dead.

Is there any benefit or downside (aside from monetary) to buying a cable modem? I noticed Comcrap is charging $7 a month now to lease. Modems aren't that expensive.

Another suggestion: Surge Protection!
Everything is backed by UPS electrically so no issues there. I put some suppression on the incoming line last night. We'll see how well it works.
